Grandma Flanagan's Chocolate Frosted Icebox Cake
Mom's made over 400 of these cakes through the years - our favorite.

Ingredients for the sponge cake:
4 eggs
1 cup milk
1/2 tsp salt
2 tbsp butter
2 cups sugar
2 cups flour
2 tsp vanilla
2 tsp baking flour

Directions for the sponge cake:
Beat eggs until light.   Add salt, sugar and vanilla.   Beat in boiling milk and melted butter.   Add flour and baking powder.   Pour immediately into  greased and floured pans and bake immediately at 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes for layers (50 minutes for tube-shaped pan).   After cooling, slice each layer horizontally in half for a total of four layers.   Icebox icing to be applied to three layers.

Ingredients for the chocolate frosting:
3/4 cup butter
1 cup XXX sugar
3 eggs separated
4 squares chocolate
1 tsp vanilla

Directions for the frosting:
  Cream butter.   Add sugar.   Cream til light & fluffy.   Add yolks one at a time.   Beat in melted chocolate and vanilla.   Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites.   Chill in refrigerator several hours before spreading on cake.
